Liver Function Test
The liver function test is a type of blood test that is done
to check for liver disease and any kind of damage. This test measures the
amount of certain enzymes and proteins in the blood.
Some tests are done to find out how well the liver is doing
its normal job of making protein and clearing the blood's waste material,
bilirubin. Some other liver tests measure enzymes that are released by liver
cells because of disease or damage.
Abnormal liver tests do not necessarily indicate liver
disease. Your doctor will explain the result very well. Diagnostic Centre in

Liver function test
is performed to find out:
·
Detection of liver infections such as hepatitis
·
Monitoring of a disease such as viral and
alcoholic hepatitis. Also to find out how well the disease is being treated.
·
Measuring the severity of the disease, especially
liver wounds (cirrhosis).
·
Monitoring the side effects of medicines. Diagnostic Centre in

The liver function
test measures the level of certain enzymes and proteins in your blood. These
levels are more or less normal, indicating liver problems. Some common liver
function tests include:
·
Alanine Transaminase (ALT). ALT is an enzyme
found in the liver that helps the body in metabolic metabolism of proteins.
When the liver is damaged, ALT is released into the blood, increasing its
level.
·
Aspartate transaminase (AST). AST is an enzyme
that helps metabolize allantoin, alanine is an amino acid. Just like ALT, AST is
present in small amounts in the blood, but its level increases when the liver
or muscles are damaged.
·
Alkaline phosphates (ALP). ALP is an enzyme
found in the liver, bile ducts, and bones. Excess of this can be a sign of
liver diseases such as a blockage in the bile ducts or some bone disease.
·
Albumin and Total Protein. Albumin is one of the
many proteins made in the liver. These proteins are needed to protect the body
from infection and for other functions. Lower than normal levels of albumin and
total protein can be a sign of liver damage or disease.
·
Bilirubin is a waste normally formed during the
breakdown of red blood cells. It passes through the liver through the feces.
High levels of bilirubin can be a sign of liver disease, damage or some kind of
anemia.
·
Gamma-Glutamyltransferase (GGT). GGT is an
enzyme found in the blood. Its increased volume may indicate liver or bile duct
damage.
·
L-lactate dehydrogenase (LD). LD is an enzyme
present in the liver. Its high levels can be a sign of a damaged liver, although
it can also increase due to other diseases.
·
Prothrombin time (PT). PT is the time when your
blood clot forms. Increased amounts may indicate liver damage, but may also be
caused by certain medications, such as warfarin, taken to thin the blood. Diagnostic Centre in

The process of taking
a blood sample is normal and there is hardly any scope of any side effect from
it. However, the following risks can occur when giving blood samples:
·
Hematoma under the skin
·
Bleeding too much
·
Syncope
·
Infection
How to prepare for
liver function test?
·
The doctor will give you complete information
about how to give blood samples for this test.
·
Some medicines and foods can affect the levels
of enzymes and proteins present in the blood, so the doctor may advise you not
to eat certain medicines and not to eat anything before the test. Don't forget
to drink lots of water before the test.
·
Wear clothes that can fold easily, this will
make it easier to take blood samples. Diagnostic Centre in

You can give a blood
sample in a hospital or lab. Health professionals before taking a sample:
·
Will clean the place from where the blood is to
be taken so that no germs remain, which may cause infection.
·
Ties a bandage on your arm to make the veins
look clean. Blood is extracted to the sample with the help of a needle.
·
After draining the blood, a bandage or cotton is
applied to that place. They send the blood sample to the lab for testing.
This result is especially for men. General results vary from
lab to lab and may vary slightly for women and children.
Your doctor will determine the diagnosis and treatment of
your health conditions based on this result. If you already have liver disease,
liver function tests will show the progress of treatment.
The normal range of liver function tests may vary depending
on the laboratory and hospital. In case of any doubt about the test result,
consult a doctor. Diagnostic Centre in
